You can get by with a minidisk or something like that and a good mic, or on the other hand you could be strapped from head to toe in mixers and mic pre amps and what not.

I know shite all about this stuff in the filming sense, but if you wanted to record some guitar... well thats another story! I guess common sense would state get the best gear YOU KNOW HOW TO USE... there is no piont getting gear thats dead complicated and wont give better results than something simpler! Micing stuff is an art in it self.

Why i even bothered to reply i dont know since i know shite all

Hey,
A friend of mine recently acquired a professional grade camera and we're set to begin shooting our first serious short film. The only problem is, I've never worked with film, only digital and video. What kind of sound and editing equipment will I need? I'm pretty sure I can borrow it somewhere, I just need to know what it is I need to borrow. Sorry I can't tell you whether the camera is 16mm, 32mm, or what. Pathetically enough I'm not even sure on that myself as he hasn't gotten back to me on it.

For a guy who seems "set to start shooting his first serious film" you seem alarmingly clueless?

Get a definite answer on the camera.

Your gonna need some lights.

Do you know what kind of stock you'll need? Do you know about light meters, apeture and f stops? About pulling focus? Have you got a clapperboard?

Editingwise you'll need to get it telecinied, probably to beta, and then find somewhere to transfer from beta to dv. Warning: this adds up.

Soundwise, for your purposes perhaps a minidisk will do. Make sure to get the clap right.

HOw much stock can you afford? I'd buy one roll first and see how ya go. Make sure you've got a decent tripod if its 16mm.

Do you know how to load film? Its got to be done in a darkbag. It's pretty infuriating, much harder than loading 8mm!

Good luck you poor fool!

My advice is to get an independant camera operator who knows how to use a film camera. You can find plenty at UK Screen.

If you want to learn how to work with film, start off with Super8. It's much cheaper in film standards!

Hm... Yes, the more I look into it I suppose I'm in over my head with the film idea. I must admit, I'm gonna have to stick with digital for this one. Thanks for the advice though.

sorry but i think thats bullsh1t. Movie making is an art form like any other, its about telling stories, creating emotional reponses, its about exploring what makes us human. What medium you use is irelevant, its like saying you can only be a good artist if you paint with oil and not watercolours, or you can only be a good photographer using black and white, or you can only be a good animator if its hand drawn.

People should try harder to come up with an idea for a movie that means something to people instead of arguing about the format it was filmed on.

Ickle Jim has nailed the pretty white puppy to the table again.

1) Art is not the media, its made with media

2) Art is Art. even if YOU think its shite.

3) The media affects the appearance of the art, but not the quality of it.

4) Nobody gives a shite until someone who matters does.

5) I think Picasso was having a big wank at us when he went cubist. bloke is a nutter. but it still sells for more than every house my family ever bought all together. go figure.

6) I dont know shite about owt, or Owt about shite. and Im rambling like a ****** Blairs Wig protest college movie

Cool

Let me blunt with you. If you decide to stick with digital which you are half moviemaker. If you want to touch film and you would be able to feel a whole moviemaker that way you can feel free on both side film and video. Do not fright of try buy a super 8mm and buy roll of film stock and shoot then process so for the telecine thing too then you can get to see and study then you will be feeling a REAL moviemaker. I considered videomaker is NOT a MOVIEMAKER because VIDEO is soooo EASY!!!! but picture real ***** so compare to 1500 resolution of s8mm's picture. Break the tide! Go for ebay to buy a super8mm camera!!! Jerome, deaf filmmaker anmd videomaker

PC and Mac is not the same as Film or Video. Film and video are two different mediums, where as PC and Mac are just two differnt tools, thats like using one brand of paintbrush over another, its still oil painting, or water colour, or whatever.
